Interior Health Launches Self-Referral for Addiction Treatment: A Step Towards Accessibility
Kelowna, BC – September 4, 2024 -Interior Health (IH) has introduced a new, virtual self-referral service for addiction treatment, aiming to reduce stigma and increase accessibility for those struggling with alcohol oropioid use disorder. This innovative program allows individuals to directly connect with the Virtual Addiction Medicine (VAM) Clinic through an online form on the IH website.
The initiative comes at a crucial time, as the toxic drug crisis continues to impact communities across British Columbia. By removing barriers to access, IH hopes to empower individuals to seek help when they need it most.
Key Features of theSelf-Referral Program:
- Virtual Access: The online platform eliminates the need for in-person appointments, making it convenient for individuals who may face transportation or other logistical challenges.
- Direct Referral: Individuals can refer themselves orbe referred by family and friends, provided they consent.
- Swift Response: A clinician will contact the individual within one business day of the referral, followed by a scheduled appointment with an addiction medicine specialist via phone or video chat.
- Personalized Treatment Plans: The VAM team collaborates with clients to developindividualized treatment plans that may include prescription medications like opioid agonist treatment (OAT).
- Community-Based Support: Once clients feel comfortable with their treatment, they are referred to community-based health services for ongoing support.
Government Support and Integration:
The Ministry of Mental Health and Addictions has expressed strongsupport for the initiative, emphasizing the importance of providing accessible and timely care for those struggling with addiction. The VAM Clinic will soon be integrated into the regional central access line and will work in conjunction with the new province-wide Opioid Treatment Access Line (1-833-804-8111) to ensure seamless access to services across BC.
Impact and Future Prospects:
Since its inception nearly three years ago, the Virtual Addiction Medicine Clinic has successfully assisted thousands of individuals seeking treatment. This new self-referral program is expected to further increase accessibility and reach, ultimately contributing to improved outcomes for those affectedby addiction.
