Mushroom Punks: A Nautilus x Beepy Bella Collaboration
In a creative fusion of art, science, and nature, designer Bella Lalonde, founder of the brand Beepy Bella, collaborated with Nautilus, a renowned science and culture publication, to create the Mushroom Punks series. This unique collaboration brings to light the beauty and intrigue of mushrooms through an innovative zine and a wearable ring.
The inspiration for this project stems from Lalonde’s childhood fascination with mushrooms. At the tender age of six, she discovered a Fly Agaric mushroom, significantly larger than her head, while hiking with her grandmother. This experience left a lasting impression, sparking her interest in fungi and embedding it in her imaginative world, which is reflected in her designs.
Beepy Bella, known for its blend of science and the natural world with a touch of ethereal playfulness, is celebrated for its jewelry, accessories, and apparel. The brand’s signature style is evident in the Mushroom Punk Ring, which was designed in collaboration with Nautilus and mushroom expert Bat Vardeh.
The day spent foraging in the Angeles Forest in southern California not only inspired the Mushroom Punk Ring but also led to the creation of an informal foraging field guide, which complements the zine. During their exploration, Lalonde, Vardeh, her assistant Oliva Kormushoff, and writer L.D. Deutsch discovered various mushrooms native to the area, creating a rich catalog of finds that are showcased in the zine.
The Mushroom Punk Ring is a testament to the partnership, combining Lalonde’s artistic vision with the natural beauty of mushrooms. Crafted from borosilicate glass, it’s a piece that is both playful and grounded in the natural world, embodying the essence of the Mushroom Punks collaboration.
