News Feature: Mushroom Punks: Art Meets Science in a Unique Collaboration

Los Angeles, CA — In a blend of art and science, Los Angeles-based designer Bella Lalonde has embarked on an innovative collaboration with Nautilus, a digital magazine known for its exploration of science, culture, and the natural world. The project, titled Mushroom Punks, is a celebration of fungi that has resulted in both a wearable piece of art and an informative zine.

The collaboration was sparked by Lalonde’s lifelong fascination with mushrooms, a passion that began at the tender age of six when she discovered a Fly Agaric mushroom the size of her head in the Swiss Alps. This enchanting experience has since been a driving force behind her artistic endeavors.

Lalonde’s brand, Beepy Bella, is renowned for its unique aesthetic that marries science and nature with a touch of whimsy. Her latest creation, the Mushroom Punk Ring, is a handmade piece of borosilicate glass that captures the essence of mushrooms in a playful, yet elegant design.

The ring was inspired by a day of foraging in the Angeles Forest in southern California, where Lalonde and mycologist Bat Vardeh, founder and president of Woman Forage SoCal, embarked on a fungal treasure hunt. Joining them were Lalonde’s assistant Oliva Kormushoff and writer L.D. Deutsch, who documented the experience.

The foraging expedition not only inspired the Mushroom Punk Ring but also led to the creation of an informal field guide by Nautilus. This guide is designed to accompany the ring and the Mushroom Punks zine, which combines vintage field guide elements with art, photography, and descriptions of the mushrooms discovered during the foraging trip.

The zine and ring are part of a broader effort to highlight the beauty and importance of fungi in our ecosystem. Mushrooms are often overlooked, but they play a crucial role in the health of our planet, says Vardeh. This collaboration is a way to bring attention to these remarkable organisms and the joy of foraging.

Nautilus, known for its engaging content on science and culture, sees this project as an extension of its mission to foster curiosity and exploration. The ‘Mushroom Punks’ collaboration is a perfect example of how art can illuminate scientific concepts and spark a deeper appreciation for the natural world, said a representative from Nautilus.

The Mushroom Punks zine and ring are now available for purchase, offering enthusiasts a chance to own a piece of this unique intersection of art and science. As Nautilus continues to explore the wonders of the universe, this collaboration is a reminder that sometimes the most extraordinary discoveries can be found right under our feet.
