Seoul, South Korea – In a bid to preserve and showcase the rich cultural heritage of the Joseon Dynasty, the Korea National Heritage Corporation (KNHC) is set to present a grand reenactment of a royal birthday banquet at Changdeokgung Palace. The event, scheduled to take place from September 4 to 5 at the rear garden’s Yenseongjeon Hall, aims to recreate the splendor of a historical celebration that took place nearly 200 years ago.

The Yenseongjeon Royal Banquet is a reenactment of a significant event in the history of the Joseon Dynasty. It commemorates the 40th birthday of Queen Jeonghyeon, the mother of Crown Prince Hyomyeong, who later became King Cheoljong. The original banquet was held in 1828 at the Yenseongjeon Hall, where the Crown Prince hosted a sumptuous feast in honor of his mother.
Collaborative Effort
The KNHC has collaborated with the Dance Department of the Korean National University of Arts and the attached World Ethnological Dance Research Institute to meticulously recreate the event. The team, led by renowned honor professor Heo Young-il and researchers from the World Ethnological Dance Research Institute, has meticulously studied the Jeongjo Gyeongjeon (纯祖戊子进爵仪轨) to ensure the authenticity of the performance.
Artistic Reconstruction
The reenactment will feature a detailed reconstruction of the dance, music, and costumes of the era. The team has paid special attention to historical accuracy, with the costumes and regalia being replicas of those worn during the Joseon Dynasty. Notably, the crown and robe of Crown Prince Hyomyeong, based on his portrait, will be showcased for the first time.
