Seoul, August 31 – Changdeokgung, one of Seoul’s historic palaces, is set to host a grand reenactment of a Joseon Dynasty royal birthday banquet, offering a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of the era’s royalty. The Cultural Heritage Administration of Korea (CHA) announced that the event, titled The 1828 Royal Birthday Banquet of Crown Prince Hyomyeong, will take place at the Yeongyeongjeon Hall in the rear garden of Changdeokgung from September 4 to 5.

The Joseon Jeongjo Year Yeongyeongjeon Royal Birthday Banquet aims to recreate the grandeur of a celebration held for the 40th birthday of Queen Jeongsun, the mother of Crown Prince Hyomyeong, in 1828. The event is a collaborative effort between the CHA’s Office of Royal Tombs and Relics and the Korea National University of Arts Dance College’s affiliate, the World Ethnography Dance Research Institute.

A Historical Reenactment

The jinje or 进爵礼, a traditional Korean court ceremony where ministers offer wine and food to the king during a celebration, will be meticulously reconstructed based on historical records. Professors Heo Young-il, an honorary professor at the Korea National University of Arts, and the World Ethnography Dance Research Institute, have exhaustively researched the Jeongjo Year Jinje Record to accurately restore the dances, music, and costumes of the period.

The reenactment will also feature a restored royal robe based on the portrait of Crown Prince Hyomyeong. This robe, which has been meticulously reconstructed, will be making its public debut during the event, offering visitors a rare chance to witness the authentic attire of the Joseon Dynasty’s royalty.

A Cultural Experience

The event is open to the public, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the cultural atmosphere of the Joseon Dynasty. The rear garden of Changdeokgung, known for its serene beauty and historical significance, provides the perfect backdrop for the reenactment. Tickets to the rear garden, however, need to be purchased separately.

Changdeokgung, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997, is one of the most visited historical sites in Seoul. The palace complex, with its stunning architecture and beautiful gardens, offers a window into the rich cultural heritage of Korea.

Historical Significance

The reenactment of the royal birthday banquet is not just a cultural spectacle but also a significant historical event. It serves as a reminder of the rich cultural legacy of the Joseon Dynasty, which ruled Korea for nearly 500 years from 1392 to 1910. The dynasty left a profound impact on Korean culture, language, and traditions, many of which are still preserved today.

Visitor Experience

The event promises to be an enriching experience for visitors, offering a rare opportunity to witness the grandeur of the Joseon Dynasty up close. The reenactment will provide insights into the court礼仪 (courtesy), the hierarchical structure of the royal court, and the intricate details of the royal lifestyle.

Conclusion

The upcoming royal birthday banquet at Changdeokgung is more than just a historical reenactment; it is a celebration of Korea’s rich cultural heritage. By bringing the past to life, the event aims to foster a deeper appreciation for the country’s history and traditions. As visitors step into the rear garden of Changdeokgung, they will be transported back in time, offering a unique and unforgettable experience.

The Cultural Heritage Administration of Korea and the Korea National University of Arts have put in considerable effort to ensure the authenticity and educational value of the event. With meticulous research and careful reconstruction, the royal birthday banquet promises to be a highlight of the cultural calendar in Seoul.
