Nigeria and Niger Strengthen Security Cooperation Amidst Tensions
Abuja, Nigeria– Nigeria and Niger have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) toenhance security cooperation, according to a statement released by the Nigerian military on August 29th. The move comes amidst strained relations between the two countries following themilitary takeover in Niger in July 2023.
The MOU was signed by the Nigerian Chief of Defence Staff and the Nigerien Chief of Army Staffin Niamey, the capital of Niger. The statement emphasized the commitment of both countries to restoring and strengthening collaboration to ensure regional stability and security.
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to restoring and strengthening cooperation to ensure regional stability and security, the statement read.
The agreement outlines plans for the Nigerien Chief of Staff to visit Nigeria to define the framework for cooperation. Niger will also establish an advisory group to improve communication between the two militaries.
The development marks a significantstep towards reconciliation between Nigeria and Niger, whose relationship has been strained since the military junta took power in Niger. The junta’s actions have been condemned by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which has imposed sanctions on Niger and threatened military intervention if the democratically elected president is not reinstated.
Niger’s decision to withdraw from ECOWAS in January, alongside Mali and Burkina Faso, further complicated the situation. The three countries have formed a Sahel Alliance through the Liptako-Gourma Charter, raising concerns about the potential for instability and regional conflict.
The renewed security cooperation between Nigeria andNiger is seen as a positive development, particularly in the fight against terrorism and insurgency in the region. The Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), which includes Nigeria, Niger, Cameroon, and Chad, has played a crucial role in combating militant groups operating along the shared borders of these countries. Niger’s willingnessto re-engage with the MNJTF is a significant step towards regional stability.
However, challenges remain. The political situation in Niger remains uncertain, and the junta’s commitment to democratic principles is unclear. The potential for further instability in the region cannot be discounted, and the success of the renewed security cooperation willdepend on the willingness of both countries to address the underlying political and security challenges.
The signing of the MOU is a positive step towards restoring stability in the region. It demonstrates the commitment of both countries to working together to address shared security threats. However, the success of this collaboration will ultimately depend on the political will ofboth governments to address the root causes of instability and conflict in the Sahel region.
