Neuralink’s First Patient Reports Dramatic Improvement, Hopes to Return to University

San Francisco, CA – Noland Arbaugh, the first recipientof Elon Musk’s Neuralink brain-computer interface, has reported a significant improvement in his quality of life since receiving the implant several months ago. Arbaugh, who was paralyzed from the shoulders down following a diving accident in 2016, expressed his desire to return to university and pursue his academic goals.

My life has been transformed in such a short time, Arbaugh said. It’s hard to even put into words.

Arbaugh, who received the Neuralink implant in January, initially experienced some complications when several ofthe device’s 64 fine wires, thinner than human hair, malfunctioned. However, Neuralink engineers successfully repaired the issue, restoring the device’s full functionality.

Arbaugh now spends approximately four hours each weekday working withNeuralink staff to test the implant. In his free time, he uses the device to read, study the Bible, and learn new languages.

I’m currently using various resources to learn French and Japanese for about three hours a day, Arbaugh shared. I’ve also decided to re-learn mathematics from scratch, hoping to return to school one day.

Arbaugh’s ambitions extend beyond academics. He plans to publish his creative works, establish a charitable foundation, and eventually build a house for his parents.

I’m having a lot of fun, and my life has improved so muchin such a short time, Arbaugh said. It’s hard to even put into words.

Arbaugh’s experience offers a glimpse into the potential of Neuralink’s technology. The company, founded by Elon Musk, aims to develop brain-computer interfaces that can help people with disabilities regain lost functionand enhance human capabilities.
