Apple’s macOS 15.1 Allows Users to Download App Store Appsto External Drives
SAN FRANCISCO, CA – August 29,2024 – Apple has announced a significant update to its macOS operating system, with macOS 15.1 introducing the ability for users to downloadand install Mac App Store applications directly to external drives. This new feature, first hinted at during the WWDC 2024 keynote, is now availablein the latest beta version of macOS 15.1.
Previously, users were required to have sufficient storage space on their internal drive to download and install apps from the Mac App Store. This often resulted in users needing to free upspace on their Mac before downloading even relatively small applications.
With macOS 15.1, however, this restriction is lifted. Users can now choose to download and install applications larger than 1GB to an external drive of theirchoice. Applications smaller than 1GB will continue to be installed on the Mac’s internal drive by default.
This new feature is made possible by a new toggle switch in the Mac App Store settings, which allows users to enable or disable the external drive installation option. Once enabled, the system will automatically downloadand install larger applications to the designated external drive.
In addition to the external drive installation feature, macOS 15.1 also removes the previous requirement for Mac App Store apps to have twice the available storage space on the internal drive as the app’s size. This means that users can now install an app thatis 2GB in size even if they only have 2GB of free space on their Mac’s internal drive.
This is a major improvement for users who are constantly running out of space on their Mac, said [Name], a senior analyst at [Company]. The ability to install apps to externaldrives will significantly improve the usability of macOS for many users.
The new feature is expected to be particularly beneficial for users who:
- Have limited storage space on their Mac: This includes users with older Macs that have smaller internal drives, as well as users who have a lot of files and applications stored on theirMac.
- Frequently download large applications: This includes users who work with video editing software, game developers, and other users who require large applications.
- Use external drives for storage: This includes users who use external drives to back up their data, store large files, or simply have more storage space available.
The release of macOS 15.1 comes just a month after the public release of macOS 15 Sequoia, which was also a major update for the operating system. macOS 15 Sequoia introduced a number of new features, including a redesigned interface, improved performance, and enhanced security features.
WhilemacOS 15.1 is currently in beta testing, it is expected to be released to the public in late October 2024. This update is a significant step forward for macOS, providing users with more flexibility and control over their storage space.
