South Korean automotive giants Hyundai and Kia have showcased innovative heating technologies that promise to enhance energy efficiency in electric vehicles (EVs). These advancements, demonstrated during a recent technology event in Korea, aim to provide a more comfortable cabin environment while minimizing energy consumption, thereby extending the driving range of EVs.
Radiant Heating System: A Revolutionary Approach
One of the key innovations presented by Hyundai and Kia is a radiant heating system. Departing from the conventional method of heating the entire cabin air, this system directly warms passengers, reducing energy waste. By focusing on heating elements that transmit warm air to passengers’ legs, the system can warm the lower body within just three minutes, consuming less energy in the process. The heating elements can reach a maximum temperature of 110 degrees Celsius but are equipped with a burn-prevention system. In the event of accidental contact, the temperature automatically decreases, ensuring passenger safety.
To demonstrate the technology, Kia installed nine panels with heating elements in its EV9 electric SUV, covering areas such as the steering wheel base, door panels, center console, and glove box bottom. This targeted heating approach not only conserves energy but also improves the overall driving experience by providing a more rapid and efficient heating solution.
48-Volt Heated Glass: Faster and More Efficient Defrosting
Another notable technology showcased is a 48-volt heated glass system. Designed to efficiently defrost windows in sub-zero temperatures, this glass can clear frost in just five minutes at minus 18 degrees Celsius, a speed four times faster than traditional air conditioning methods. Additionally, the glass features a metal coating that not only conducts heat but also blocks solar radiation, helping to maintain a cooler interior during hot weather. This energy-saving feature reduces power consumption by approximately 10% compared to standard air conditioning systems.
Insulation Film: Maintaining Optimal Cabin Temperature
Hyundai and Kia also revisited their insulation film technology, first introduced in 2023. This special film blocks external heat from entering the vehicle while allowing accumulated heat inside to dissipate, ensuring a more comfortable cabin environment. Hyundai conducted real-world tests in Pakistan, where the film was shown to lower the interior temperature by up to 12.5 degrees Celsius, further contributing to energy efficiency and passenger comfort.
