Shiga Prefecture Offers Support for Foreign Children’s Education
Shiga,Japan – In a continued effort to ensure all children have access to education,Shiga Prefecture is actively working to support the enrollment of foreign children in local schools. According to the Shiga Prefectural Board of Education, there are currentlysix children in the prefecture who may be at risk of being out of school.
To address this issue, the Shiga International Association operates the Shiga Foreigner Consultation Center, providing support and guidance to foreign residents in the prefecture. The center offers multilingual consultations in languages such as Chinese, Korean, and North Korean, facilitating communication through a three-way dialogue with interpreters. Theconsultation center can be reached at 077-523-5646 during weekdays from Monday to Friday. It is closed on weekends, national holidays, and during the year-end and New Year holidays.
Forforeign children seeking enrollment in public elementary or junior high schools in Shiga Prefecture, parents are generally required to complete the necessary procedures when registering their residence at the city, town, or village government where they reside. However, if these procedures have not been completed or if the child is not yet registered as a resident, parentsare advised to contact the Citizen Affairs Section or the Board of Education of their local government for guidance.
