In a tribute to the late Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping, a memorial forum was held in Shenzhen, Guangdong province, on August 26 to mark his 120th birthday. The event, organized by the provincial government, aimed to honor Deng’s significant contributions to China’s reform and opening up, as well as his role in the development of the special economic zones.
Speaking at the forum, Huang Kunming, the Secretary of the Guangdong Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), emphasized the need to uphold and promote the spirit of reform and opening up, as well as the pioneering spirit of the special economic zones. Huang called for continued efforts to break new ground, maintain a spirit of innovation, and strive for practical results in pursuit of China’s path to modernization.
The event took place against the backdrop of the lush surroundings of Lotus Hill Park, where Huang and other provincial leaders, including Governor Wang Weizhong, Standing Committee of the Guangdong Provincial People’s Congress Chairperson Huang Chuiping, and Guangdong Provincial Deputy Secretary and Shenzhen City Party Secretary Meng Fanli, laid a floral tribute at the statue of Deng Xiaoping. The inscription on the statue, Shenzhen’s development and experience prove that our policy of establishing special economic zones was correct, stood out in the morning sun, symbolizing the enduring legacy of Deng’s vision.
Huang Kunming highlighted Deng’s close ties with Guangdong, pointing out that he had visited the province multiple times throughout his career, supporting its growth in various historical periods. He stressed that the best way to honor Deng’s memory is by advancing the cause of socialism with Chinese characteristics that he had initiated.
To this end, Huang underscored the importance of leveraging the pivotal role of reform and opening up, urging a persistent spirit of daring to explore, innovate, and work diligently. He called for the further development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area as a platform for deepening reform and expanding high-level opening up. The focus would be on strengthening the construction of the Shenzhen pilot demonstration area and key platforms like Qianhai, Nansha, and the Heidelberg-Hong Kong-Shenzhen Cross-Border Industrial Zone.
The forum aimed to inspire new achievements that would impress the world and contribute significantly to China’s national rejuvenation and the building of a strong nation. Participants were encouraged to continue writing the spring stories that have characterized Guangdong’s remarkable transformation over the past decades.
The event was part of a series of nationwide commemorations acknowledging Deng’s pivotal role in shaping modern China. As the architect of the country’s economic reforms and the opening up policy, Deng’s birthday serves as a reminder of the importance of his ideas and the ongoing commitment to his vision for a prosperous and harmonious nation.
In recent years, Guangdong has been at the forefront of China’s economic growth, with the Greater Bay Area initiative further boosting regional integration and innovation. The province’s dedication to honoring Deng’s legacy through continued progress and development underscores its commitment to his ideals and the pursuit of a China Dream.
As China moves forward on its path to modernization, events like the forum in Shenzhen serve to reiterate the importance of Deng Xiaoping’s contributions and the enduring relevance of his ideas in shaping the nation’s future.
