Kim Jong-un Oversees Drone Attack Tests, Emphasizing Development of UnmannedWarfare Capabilities
Seoul, August 26, 2024 – North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has overseen drone attack performance tests, emphasizing the development of unmanned warfare capabilities, according to state media reports. The tests, conducted on August 24th at the Defense Science Institute’s drone research facility, involved a range of drones designed for both land and sea attacks.
The official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that Kim Jong-un personally guided the tests, observing the drones’ ability to accurately identify and destroy designated targets. The drones, which flew according to pre-programmed routes, demonstratedtheir effectiveness in various attack scenarios.
Kim Jong-un’s emphasis on unmanned warfare capabilities signals a shift in North Korea’s military strategy, focusing on the development of advanced technologies to counter potential threats. He specifically instructed relevant departments toexpedite the deployment of these drones into military units.
Beyond the attack drones, Kim Jong-un highlighted the importance of developing other unmanned systems, including strategic reconnaissance drones, multi-functional attack drones, and various suicide drones for tactical infantry and special operations units. He also stressed the need to continue developing underwater strategic weapons systems, such as nuclear torpedoes, and unmanned attack boats.
The North Korean leader further emphasized the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into drone development, recognizing its potential to enhance the capabilities of unmanned systems.
The tests showcased two new suicide drones, both featuring a white exterior and resembling the Israeli-made Harop and Hero-30 suicide drones. These drones were shown attacking and detonating against a simulated target resembling a South Korean K2 main battle tank. This marks the first time North Korea has publicly displayed suicide drones.
The development of these drones comes amidst heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula, with NorthKorea conducting a series of missile tests in recent months. The country has also been actively expanding its nuclear weapons program, raising concerns among its neighbors and the international community.
The tests overseen by Kim Jong-un demonstrate North Korea’s growing reliance on unmanned warfare capabilities, which could potentially pose a significant threat to its adversaries. The development of suicide drones, in particular, raises concerns about the potential for asymmetric warfare tactics and the escalation of conflict on the peninsula.
The international community is closely monitoring North Korea’s military advancements, with calls for increased dialogue and diplomacy to address the growing security concerns. The development of sophisticated unmanned systems like dronesfurther underscores the need for a comprehensive approach to regional security and stability.
