We want to be doctors that the people of Malawi trust, says Dr. Fan Jiangbo, the captain of the sixth Chinese medical team to Malawi, a sentiment echoed by his colleagues. Theirmission, spanning from April 15, 2018, to May 6, 2019, was a testament to their unwavering commitment. In a country where life expectancy lags behind global averages and maternal and infant mortality rates remain high, the Chinese medical team has become a vital force,working alongside local doctors to address the pressing healthcare needs.

One such challenge arose in August 2018, when a 31-year-old HIV-positive patient was transferred to the Kamuzu Central Hospital, where the Chinese team was stationed. The patient, suffering from a massive cervical fibroid, presented a complex case with severe pelvic adhesions. Local doctors, lacking experience with such procedures, deemed the surgery too risky and opted to forgo it.
Dr. Fan, recognizing the gravity of the situation, stepped forward, assuming the responsibility for the surgery. After hours of meticulous work, he successfully removed the fibroid and adenomyosis,preserving the patient’s uterus. During the procedure, Dr. Fan also took the opportunity to teach the local doctors a new technique for fibroid excision and suture hemostasis.
