Chinese Medical Team in Ghana Makes Strides in Improving Local Healthcare

Accra, Ghana – The 13th Chinese Medical Team dispatched to Ghanais actively contributing to improving the local healthcare system by conducting consultations, surgeries, and providing training. The team, comprised of 11 medical professionals from theFirst Affiliated Hospital of Jinan University, arrived in Ghana in March this year and will be stationed there for a year.

The team’s workis evident at the China-Ghana Friendship Hospital, a symbol of the deepening medical cooperation between the two countries since its establishment in 2010. Even after working hours, the hospital corridors are bustling with patients waiting for consultations.Dr. Zhang Rijia, the team’s leader and an ophthalmologist, is still busy examining patients.

Regina, an elderly patient who recently underwent cataract surgery, is receiving a post-operative check-up from Dr.Zhang. She’s recovering very well! Dr. Zhang explains to Regina, who doesn’t speak English, through a local nurse translator. Continue taking these two medications… Regina, overwhelmed with gratitude, expresses her appreciation for the Chinese doctor’s skill and attentiveness. Chinese doctorsare highly skilled and very patient with their patients, she says, giving Dr. Zhang a flying kiss as she leaves.

The team’s diverse expertise, encompassing nine different medical specialties, has been instrumental in enhancing the hospital’s capabilities. We are very happy with our cooperation with the Chinese medicalteam, says Dr. Asanti, the hospital’s director. They have exceptional medical skills and are not only helping local people but also training our staff.

The Chinese medical professionals have quickly built strong bonds with both patients and local healthcare workers. Seth, a 63-year-old man whosuffered a stroke several years ago, leaving him unable to speak, has been receiving treatment from Dr. Qing Peng, an acupuncturist. I couldn’t continue working because of my speech impairment. I went to many hospitals, but nothing helped, Seth explains. Then my son heard about theChinese doctors here and brought me to try. Dr. Qing Peng, skillfully administering acupuncture, notes that Seth is now able to communicate through simple phrases.

Although people here are not very familiar with traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture, more and more people are experiencing its benefits and the word is spreading, Dr. QingPeng says. Local patients trust Chinese doctors and are very cooperative during treatment, which makes us feel even more responsible.

The team’s impact extends beyond direct patient care. They regularly offer free consultations to Chinese companies, overseas Chinese communities, and local charities. Recently, the team received an invitation from theUNESCO Ghana office to provide medical assistance to children at a local orphanage. The team conducted health checkups, established health records, and arranged surgeries for two children.

I am deeply moved by the Chinese doctors providing free medical aid to Ghanaian orphans, says Edmund Mukala, UNESCO Representative to Ghana. This givesGhanaian people a chance to better understand China and the kindness of the Chinese people.

The Chinese medical team in Ghana is a testament to China’s ongoing commitment to sending medical teams to Africa. These teams are a key component of the Nine Programs initiative, a joint effort between China and African nations to strengthencooperation. In recent years, as cultural exchange between China and Africa has intensified, many African healthcare professionals have been given the opportunity to study and train in China.

Edward Anson, an obstetrician at the China-Ghana Friendship Hospital, is one such professional. He recently completed a training program in Chinaand is now sharing his newfound knowledge with his colleagues. The training I received in China has significantly improved my skills, Anson says. I am now able to provide better care to my patients.

The Chinese medical team’s work in Ghana is not only improving healthcare but also strengthening the bonds between the twocountries. Their dedication and expertise are making a tangible difference in the lives of Ghanaians, while fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation for Chinese culture and medicine. As Dr. Zhang Rijia aptly puts it, We are here to help, and we are committed to making a positive impact on the lives of the Ghanaianpeople.
