Paris Marks 80th Anniversary of Liberation with Events and Remembrances
PARIS, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) — France has been holding aseries of events to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Paris from Nazi German occupation.
August 25th marks the anniversary ofthe liberation of Paris. In August 1944, Allied forces, led by the Free French Army, entered the city, supported by the French Resistance. After fierce battles with the German defenders, Paris was liberated on August 25th, 1944. General Charles de Gaulle, leader of the Free French forces, declared the liberation of Paris at the city hall, anda victory parade was held on the Champs-Élysées the following day.
The French government has organized a series of events to commemorate this significant historical event. On August 12th, French President Emmanuel Macron attended a ceremony atthe Paris Police Prefecture, where he delivered a speech. Eighty years ago, Paris police officers seized control of the police headquarters and arrested the then-police chief who had collaborated with the German occupiers, marking the beginning of the liberation of Paris.
In his speech, Macron praised the courage and sacrifice of theFree French fighters who took control of the police headquarters and liberated Paris. He also expressed gratitude to the police officers who have contributed to the Paris Olympics.
The Musée de la Libération de Paris (Paris Liberation Museum) also held a commemorative ceremony this week. Xinhua reporters witnessed a steady stream of French citizens visiting the museum. Visitors listened to recordings of de Gaulle’s speeches from that time through headphones. The museum also displayed precious footage of the liberation of Paris, attracting visitors to stop and watch.
The main official commemoration of the liberation of Paris usually takes place at the Paris City Hall. However, due to the upcoming Paralympic Games, the City Hall is still equipped with many Olympic-related facilities, making it difficult to set up a venue for the liberation commemoration. The French government has decided to hold this year’s main commemorative event at the Place de la Porte de Versailles in southern Paris, and a simplified entry ceremony will also be held, aiming torecreate the historical scene. The participating troops will march from the Porte d’Orléans to the Place de la Porte de Versailles. Eighty years ago, General Leclerc led the Free French armored division into Paris from the Porte d’Orléans.
Reporters noticed that large screens have been installed at the Place de la Porte de Versailles, displaying photos of military leaders and soldiers who participated in the liberation of Paris. The main official commemorative event is scheduled to begin on the afternoon of the 25th and continue into the evening. The torch relay for the Paris Paralympics will also take place there.
The liberation of Paris is considered to be ofgreat symbolic significance. The Free French soldiers and the French Resistance paid a heavy price for the liberation of Paris. About 1,500 members of the French Resistance and civilians died, and hundreds of Free French soldiers were injured. Approximately 3,200 German soldiers were killed.
After the liberation ofParis, the military operations of World War II in France were far from over. The Allied forces continued to fight for several months before finally clearing the Nazi German forces from mainland France.
