CAIRO, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) – A delegation of senior Hamas officials arrived in Cairo on Thursday to hear from mediators about the latest developmentsin the Gaza ceasefire talks, the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) said in a statement.

The statement said Hamas reaffirmed its “commitment to abide bythe agreement approved on July 2 based on US President Joe Biden’s proposal and is ready to implement it.” Previously, Hamas had said it agreed to the ceasefire proposal it received on July 2, which was based on relevant UN SecurityCouncil resolutions and Biden’s suggestions. Hamas said it was ready to immediately discuss mechanisms for implementing the proposal.

Another senior Hamas official, quoted by Reuters, said the delegation’s trip to Cairo “does not mean Hamas will participate inthe next round of talks.”

The latest round of Gaza ceasefire talks ended in Doha, Qatar, on Aug. 16, with Israeli, American, Qatari, and Egyptian negotiators attending. Hamas did not send representatives. As no breakthrough was achieved, the parties decided to continue the talks in Cairo. The Israelidelegation arrived in Cairo on Aug. 22.

Hamas’s delegation’s trip to Cairo indicates its importance attached to the ceasefire talks and reflects the expectation of all parties to reach a ceasefire agreement as soon as possible. However, Hamas’s clear statement that it will not participate in the next round oftalks suggests its dissatisfaction with the current progress of the talks and the possibility of some disagreements and disputes.

The focus of the Gaza ceasefire talks currently lies on how Israel and Hamas can address each other’s core concerns, including Israel’s security threats from Hamas and Hamas’s demand for the lifting of the blockade onthe Gaza Strip.

Analysts believe that Hamas’s trip to Cairo to hear about the latest developments could provide new ideas and directions for the next stage of the talks. However, whether the ceasefire talks can achieve substantial progress still requires joint efforts from all parties to seek a solution acceptable to both sides.
