Cultural China Tour | “Reading Wu Yue” ⑤
InBanqiao Town, Lin’an, Zhejiang, on a summer morning, the tranquility of the village is broken by the sound of reading. Children, holding brushes, meticulously copy the “Qian Family Instructions,” embarking on a Wu Yue cultural study tour. This set of family wisdom, born a thousand years ago, has now become a national-level intangible cultural heritage project, its influence extending far beyonda single family, becoming a shared spiritual and cultural treasure of the Chinese nation.
The “Qian Family Instructions” was written by Qian Liu, the King of Wu Yue in the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period. It consists ofonly over 600 characters, yet it encompasses four levels: individual, family, society, and nation. It integrates the Confucian ideal of “cultivating oneself, regulating one’s family, governing the country, and bringing peace to the world” into daily life, becoming an easy-to-understand “popularreading” of Confucianism. “Diligence and thrift are the foundation, and you will surely be prosperous” teaches the virtue of thrift to descendants, while “Be sincere in your friendships, and be kind to your neighbors” emphasizes the importance of having a broad perspective in making friends. From children to the elderly, peopleof all ages can draw wisdom from it.
Wang Changjin, chief expert at the Wu Yue Culture Research Institute of Zhejiang Agricultural and Forestry University and dean of Zhejiang Tianmu Academy, points out that the “Qian Family Instructions” combines profound ethics with everyday details, passing on moral ideals subtly through parental teachings, reflectingthe “power of moral inheritance.”
The “Three Qians” of modern science – Qian Xuesen, Qian Weichang, and Qian Sanqiang, as well as other descendants of the Qian family in various fields, have all been deeply influenced by the family instructions. Qian Xuesen’s father, QianJunfu, once said, “Our Qian family has been diligent and thrifty for generations, and we have been very strict with our descendants. Perhaps this is due to the influence of our ancestral family instructions.” Qian Weichang also stated that the explosion of talent in the Qian family in modern times is partly due to the”Qian Family Instructions,” emphasizing education and fostering a culture of reading, making it easier to produce talented individuals.
From family wisdom to national spiritual wealth, the “Qian Family Instructions” has shone brightly for a thousand years. It is not only a precious legacy of Wu Yue culture but also an important part oftraditional Chinese culture, leaving a long-lasting echo for posterity.
