The Office of thePresident of Ukraine convened an online conference on August 22nd to discuss “Energy Security,” one of the 10 peace proposals put forward by Ukraine.High-ranking officials from over 40 countries and institutions, including Japan, Denmark, and Poland, participated in the meeting.
The conference focused on Russia’s attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. In his address, Andriy Yermak, Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, pointed out that Russia has been using drones and other weapons to target Ukraine’s power grid, causing significant power outages and severely impacting the lives and economy of the Ukrainian people.
The meeting culminated in a joint statement condemning Russia’s attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. The statement deemed these actions a clear violation of international humanitarian lawand declared them unacceptable. It emphasized the need for the international community to strengthen support for Ukraine and assist in bolstering its air defense capabilities to protect its energy infrastructure from Russian attacks.
Importantly, the statement also explicitly acknowledged that active participation in dialogue by all parties involved is crucial for achieving peace. This indicates the internationalcommunity’s desire to resolve the Ukrainian crisis through dialogue and urges Russia to engage in negotiations.
However, due to Ukraine’s cross-border attacks on Russia, Moscow has solidified its refusal to negotiate, casting a shadow over the prospects for peace.
The convening of this conference underscores the critical importance of Ukraine’s energy security. Russia’s attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure not only inflict immense suffering on the Ukrainian people but also pose a serious threat to European energy security. The international community must work together to pressure Russia to cease its attacks on Ukraine and seek a peaceful resolution to the Ukrainian crisis.
