70th Anniversary of the Sichuan-Tibet and Qinghai-Tibet Highways: Loyalty and Dedication on the Plateau

70 years ago, the completion and opening of the Sichuan-Tibet and Qinghai-Tibet Highways connected the southwestern frontier of our motherland with the mainland, marking the beginning of a magnificent chapter of loyalty and dedication written by countless builders and guardians on the plateau. Today, this “Sky Road” has become a lifeline connecting the east and west of China, while the stories of those heroes whohave taken root and dedicated themselves to the plateau continue to echo on the plateau.

Recently, CCTV reported on the scene of a motor transport brigade of the Qinghai-Tibet Garrison of the PLA Army conducting off-road driving training onthe northern Tibetan plateau. Reporters witnessed firsthand the training of 10-ton trucks performing emergency evasive maneuvers on special road sections at an altitude of over 4,600 meters. The soldiers conducted training according to the steps of receiving enemy intelligence, judging the situation, making a decision, and organizing evacuation, constantly honing their comprehensive and excellent driving skills.

“This is my second year on the plateau, and I deeply feel that the practical actions of our senior comrades in taking root and dedicating themselves to the plateau are a true reflection of the ‘Spirit of the Two Roads’,” said Liu Xukang, a motor soldier.

In September 1954, this motor unit was dispatched to the Qinghai-Tibet line to carry out material support tasks for the construction of the Qinghai-Tibet Highway, leaving the first tire tracks on the “Sky Road.” For 70 years, they have been fighting on thesnow-covered plateau with an average altitude of nearly 4,500 meters, undertaking the task of transporting materials to Tibet year-round, and have been awarded honorary titles such as “Good Eighth Company on the Qinghai-Tibet Transport Line” and “Model Transport Company on the Qinghai-TibetPlateau.”

“All along, the soldiers have been driving iron steeds, fighting against hypoxia, battling the cold, galloping across the 4,000-kilometer Qinghai-Tibet line, inheriting and carrying forward the ‘Spirit of the Two Roads’, and striving to build a new type of transport supportforce,” said Li Shuangqin, a motor soldier.

On the plateau, there are also motor soldiers like Senior Sergeant Yue Guofeng, who has been stationed on the Qinghai-Tibet line for 25 years. He has integrated cool skills such as lighting matches while turning corners, opening bottle capswith drifting, and driving on a tightrope into daily training, demonstrating the “tempered steel” spirit of a soldier with practical actions.

“Facing hypoxia, cold weather, and harsh environments on the plateau, to be honest, sometimes my body can’t take it. But as a soldier, I must always rememberthat I have my family and my country behind me,” said Yue Guofeng.

Over 70 years of journey through wind and rain, the Sichuan-Tibet and Qinghai-Tibet Highways have witnessed the development and progress of China, and also witnessed the loyalty and dedication written by countless builders and guardianson the plateau with their youthful passion. Their stories will forever inspire future generations to continue to carry forward the “Spirit of the Two Roads” on the path of building our country and guarding our borders, contributing to the realization of the Chinese Dream of national rejuvenation.
