NANNING, Aug.23 (Xinhua) — The Guangxi Forestry Department announced on Wednesday that a large population of Guizhou hickory, a nationally protected endangered plant, has been discoveredin Guangxi for the first time. The discovery was made by a joint team from the Guangxi Forestry Design Institute and the Guangxi Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences, during a comprehensive scientific expedition in the Southwest Karst National ParkCreation Zone in Huanjiang Maonan Autonomous County.

The team discovered the population while conducting a vegetation survey in the Mulun National Nature Reserve and its surrounding areas. After consulting relevant materials, comparing specimens, and seeking expert identification, the specieswas confirmed to be Guizhou hickory, a nationally protected wild plant.

Xiang Wusheng, a researcher at the Guangxi Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences, explained that the Guizhou hickory population mainly coexists with species like Cyclobalanopsis glauca, Eurycorymbus cavaleriei, and Choerospondias axillaris, forming a mixed evergreen and deciduous broad-leaved forest on limestone. In some areas, it forms pure forests. Based on field surveys, drone measurements, and sample plot investigations, the population covers over 10 hectares. The average diameter at breast height of the hickorytrees exceeds 30 centimeters, with some reaching over 70 centimeters. The large distribution area and strong native character of the population are rare in China.

Guizhou hickory is a nationally protected wild plant with significant ecological and scientific value. Its fruit is rich in nutrients and has medicinal properties. It is also animportant species for ecological restoration. The discovery of this population indicates the excellent ecological environment protection in the Maolan-Mulun area of the Southwest Karst National Park Creation Zone, providing valuable reference data for ecological governance and vegetation restoration in karst rocky desertification areas.

The Guangxi Forestry Department stated that it will furtherstrengthen the protection and research of the Guizhou hickory population and actively explore its application in ecological restoration and industrial development, contributing to the construction of an ecological civilization and a beautiful Guangxi.
