BEIJING, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) — German exports fell by 1.6 percent year-on-year to 80.17 billion euros in the first half of 2024, according to data released by the Federal Statistical Office of Germany. Imports dropped by 6.2 percent to 66.28 billion euros during the same period.

These figures indicate that Germany’s foreign trade faced certain challenges in the first half of the year. Despite the decline in exports, Germany’s trade surplus for the first six months of 2024 stood at 13.88 billion euros, up 28.7 percent from the 10.79 billion euros recorded in the same period last year. The surplus was mainly due to a significant surplus in trade with the United States and a reduction in the deficit with the Chinese market.

In terms of exported goods, motor vehicles and parts remained the top category, with an export value of 13.53 billion euros, a decrease of 2.4 percent year-on-year. Machinery exports came in second, with a value of 10.96 billion euros, a decline of 4.4 percent. Chemical products ranked third, with exports valued at 7.18 billion euros, a decrease of 4.4 percent.

On the import side, motor vehicles and parts were the most significant items, with an import value of 7.3 billion euros, a drop of 4.2 percent year-on-year. Data processing equipment ranked second, with an import value of 6.43 billion euros, a decline of 9.8 percent.

Germany’s trade surplus with the United States was the largest, standing at 3.47 billion euros. However, the country experienced a trade deficit with China, totaling 2.53 billion euros.

The Federal Statistical Office noted that the United States remains the most important export market for German goods, while the majority of Germany’s imports come from China. This data shows that despite the global economic uncertainties, Germany is adapting its export structure to face challenges and maintain its international trade competitiveness.

German economists analyzed that the decline in exports may be attributed to slowing global economic growth and the rise of trade protectionism. Germany also needs to pay attention to international market dynamics and adjust its trade strategies flexibly to meet future trade challenges.

In summary, Germany’s trade data for the first half of 2024 indicate the necessity of economic adjustment and structural optimization. The German economy must innovate and enhance efficiency to adapt to changes in the external environment and maintain long-term economic growth and trade surplus.
