SEOUL, Aug. 18 (Yonhap) — The Korean and U.S. militaries will conduct a joint drill aimed at defending the Korean Peninsula, known as the Ulchi Freedom Guardian (UFG), from Aug. 19 to 29. The exercise is aimed at reinforcing the alliance between South Korea and the United States and responding to any provocations, particularly the threat of large-scale weapons of mass destruction from North Korea.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) in South Korea said the Ulchi Freedom Guardian will start at 00:01 a.m. on Aug. 19. This year’s exercise will be larger than last year’s, with particularly an increase in the number of field-level exercises from four to 17. The South Korean Army, Navy and Air Force will conduct various maneuvers during the joint exercise, with the Army aiming to enhance its large-scale actual mobility and firing capabilities through joint outdoor maneuvers, the Navy conducting harbor defense and integrated rescue drills, and the Air Force participating in outdoor maneuvers alongside other branches, totaling over 80 such exercises.
The JCS emphasized that the exercise will train the South Korean and U.S. forces in their actual combat capabilities across various domains, including ground, sea, air, cyber, and space, to effectively respond to any threats from North Korea. The South Korean-U.S. alliance’s joint exercise demonstrates a firm commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the region.
Moreover, the South Korean and U.S. forces will establish an integrated command in a joint amphibious exercise for the first time to enhance their ability to respond to various military challenges. The exercise comes amid the anniversary of the U.S.-South Korea-Japan summit held in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), highlighting close cooperation among the three countries in addressing regional security challenges.
As international situations continue to change, the South Korean and U.S. militaries have further strengthened their military cooperation through such joint exercises, making a positive contribution to maintaining regional stability and global security. Yonhap News Agency will continue to monitor the progress of the exercise and provide the latest information.
