A member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a theoretical physicist, Zhou Guangzhao made outstanding contributions to the development of nuclear weapons and theoretical physics in China.

Born on May 1929 in Changsha, Hunan, Zhou Guangzhao was a member of the Communist Party of China. He made outstanding achievements in the field of theoretical physics, particularly in particle physics and quantum field theory, with his research recognized internationally. In 1958, he proposed the helical amplitude of particles and established the corresponding mathematical methods, and in 1960, he derived the Principle of Chiral Anomaly (PCAC), becoming one of the founders in the field.

Zhou Guangzhao played a crucial role in the development of China’s nuclear weapons, making significant contributions to the successful development of the first atomic bomb and hydrogen bomb, for which he was awarded the First Prize for National Natural Science in 1964. His breakthrough in quantum field theory also earned him the First Prize for Major Scientific and Technological Achievements of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1987.

Zhou Guangzhao’s achievements were not limited to theoretical research; he was also awarded honorary doctorates by prestigious universities such as the City University of New York, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the University of Hong Kong, and McGill University in Canada. In 1993, he was honored with the “Order of the Star of Italy” by the Italian government, and in 1994, he received the “China Outstanding Scientist Award” from the Hong Kong Qiusuo Science and Technology Foundation. In 1996, the International Astronomical Union agreed to name the asteroid with the number 3462 as “Zhou Guangzhao Asteroid.” In 1999, he was awarded the Medal of Merit for the Two Bombs and the Satellite for his outstanding contributions to China’s scientific and technological cause.

Zhou Guangzhao’s passing is a great loss to China’s scientific community, and his scientific spirit and academic achievements will be forever remembered in the annals of history. His contributions not only elevated China’s international status but also set an example for future generations of scientists.
