BEIJING, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) — A brain-machine interface sensor was successfully extracted from a patient’s blood vessels in a groundbreaking trial in Beijing, marking a significant step forward in the safety and clinical application of the technology, according to a report from Nankai University on Tuesday.
The trial, led by Professor Duan Feng’s team from the School of Medicine and the College of Artificial Intelligence at Nankai University, was the first of its kind to safely remove an implantable brain-machine interface sensor and its wireless transmission module. This achievement represents a crucial advancement in the safety of vascular brain-machine interface technology, providing a solid foundation for its clinical use.
On May 4, 2023, Duan’s team conducted the world’s first non-human primate vascular brain-machine interface experiment, achieving a technological leap from passive to active control of invasive electroencephalography (EEG) signals. The breakthroughs included core technologies such as vascular EEG signal acquisition and invasive EEG signal recognition.
This latest trial is a further development based on the previous work.
During the experiment, researchers implanted a wireless transmission device under the skin of the experimental animal and transmitted the collected invasive EEG signals via the wireless device, achieving stable and efficient signal transmission. Additionally, the invasive brain-machine interface sensor previously placed on the vascular wall of the sheep’s skull was safely extracted through surgical intervention.
Duan noted that the trial not only made important progress in the research of brain-machine interface technology but also demonstrated the great potential of vascular brain-machine interfaces in terms of safety and application. The application of wireless transmission technology will make the vascular brain-machine interface system more portable and user-friendly, allowing for the control of rehabilitation and movement assistance robots by identifying brain signals from the motor cortex, bringing hope to patients with conditions such as stroke, brain injury, and paraplegia, significantly improving their quality of life.
Duan also pointed out that in the future, this technology will contribute to the creation of a high-end medical equipment brand through “medical-engineering integration,” bringing a broad market outlook and profound social benefits to the medical rehabilitation field for brain diseases.
