News Title: “Deciphering Stonehenge: The Altar Stones May Originate from Scotland”
Keywords: Stonehenge, Altar Stones, Scottish Origin

BEIJING, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) — As one of Europe’s famous prehistoric cultural and religious sites, the mysterious Stonehenge in England, with its massive stones, has been a subject of great interest regarding the origin of the altar stones, which are particularly significant. A recent archaeological paper published in the internationally renowned academic journal “Nature” suggests that the altar stones of Stonehenge might come from the northeastern part of Scotland. This research has deepened our understanding of the prehistoric culture in Britain and its connections, revealing a high level of societal organization at the time.
Researchers discovered the source of the Bluestones of Stonehenge, which is also a Neolithic site. By analyzing zircon, apatite, and chlorite grains in the fragments of the altar stones, they compared the age and chemical properties with those of British and Irish sedimentary deposits, revealing a striking similarity to the Old Red Sandstone of the Orcadian Basin. The research indicates that the altar stones could have originated from the Old Red Sandstone.
This finding suggests that the origin of the altar stones at Stonehenge is 750 kilometers away from their current location. The paper’s authors note that the geological features and forest cover in Britain at the time might have made land transportation difficult. They suggest that the altar stones could have been transported from the northeastern part of Scotland to the south of England via sea route.
The authors conclude that their research indicates a high level of societal organization in Neolithic Britain, capable of long-distance transportation. This discovery not only provides new evidence for the study of Stonehenge but also offers important clues for understanding prehistoric human activities and societal organization.
