SEOUL, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) — South Korea marked its annual “Comfort Women” Memorial Day on Friday, with citizens and civic groups gathering in the capital Seoul to demand a formal apology and legal compensation from the Japanese government for its past “Comfort Women” issue, and to restore the honor of the victims.
The demonstration was held outside the Japanese Embassy in Jongno District, Seoul, where 145 groups from eight countries, including South Korea, Japan, and the United States, brought together more than 400 students and citizens. They held signs reading “Official Apology, Legal Compensation” to express their dissatisfaction with the Japanese government’s failure to acknowledge its history and respect the victims.
The gathering also served as a call for the South Korean government to stop what is referred to as “humiliating diplomacy” and take concrete actions to protect the rights of the “Comfort Women” victims. The participants stated that their aim was to make the voices of the “Comfort Women” victims heard around the world and to strive for their due justice and respect.
In November 2017, the South Korean National Assembly passed an amendment to the “Support for the Stable Lives of Military Sexual Slavery Victims Act,” designating Aug. 14 as the “Comfort Women” Memorial Day. The establishment of this memorial day is intended to keep the memory of this history alive not only in South Korea but also around the world, and to use it as a leverage to push the Japanese government to acknowledge its history and take responsibility.
The actions of South Korea’s citizens are not only a respect for historical memory but also a commitment to peace and justice. In today’s globalized world, such commemorative events are particularly important, reminding us that history cannot be forgotten, and justice and truth will ultimately prevail over everything.
