EU Launches Civil Defense Mechanism to Deploy Aircraft and Firefighters to Greece
BEIJING, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) — Following wildfires in the suburbs of Athens, the capital of Greece, the European Union (EU) announced on Thursday the deployment of several planes and firefighters to assist Greece in extinguishing the flames.
According to a statement released by the European Commission on the same day, in response to Greece’s request, the EU has activated its civil defense mechanism to urgently mobilize aerial and ground firefighting resources to support the Greek effort. Two firefighting planes from Italy and two helicopters from France and Serbia are currently assisting in the firefighting efforts in Greece through the European Commission’s Emergency Response Coordination Centre.
Additionally, fire brigades from France, Italy, the Czech Republic, Romania, and Serbia have been dispatched to Greece to join the firefighting efforts alongside the firefighters from Romania, Malta, and Moldova, who were pre-deployed by the EU in Greece this summer.
The statement said the European Commission is closely monitoring the fire situation in Greece and is ready to provide further assistance as needed.
Since the beginning of summer, Greece has experienced frequent wildfires due to persistent high temperatures, dry conditions, and strong winds. On August 11, a wildfire broke out in the suburbs of Athens and rapidly spread, causing at least eight injuries and forcing tens of thousands of residents to evacuate. The wildfires have also led to the declaration of emergency states in multiple towns and cities on Greece’s largest island, Crete.
The European Commission’s statement noted that to prepare for possible wildfires this summer, the EU has pre-deployed more than 540 firefighters in Greece, France, Portugal, and Spain, along with 28 planes and 4 helicopters in 10 member states, to bolster disaster relief capabilities and be ready to assist affected countries in extinguishing fires.
The swift response from the EU demonstrates its coordination capabilities and spirit of international cooperation in the face of natural disasters, as well as its active role as a regional integration organization in tackling common threats. The Greek side welcomed the EU’s aid and expressed gratitude for the support provided by the member states. The wildfires represent a severe test not only for Greece but for the entire EU region, but the EU’s assistance efforts have undoubtedly brought hope and confidence to the affected areas.
