Wang’an Village in Cha Guan County, Shahe City, Hebei Province, is renowned as the “Taihang Fortified Village,” a traditional Chinese village with a history of over 600 years. The village not only retains intact ancient stone courtyard complexes but also boasts a unique architectural style that blends the majestic features of the northern Taihang Mountains with the graceful characteristics of Sichuan’s countryside. The village’s courtyards are connected, and houses are interlinked, resembling both a fortress and a maze, with strong military defensive functions.
The layout of Wang’an Village follows the terrain, with over 130 well-preserved ancient courtyards and more than 2,000 rooms still standing. According to the “Wang Family Genealogy,” the village began in the Yongle period of the Ming Dynasty, with the founding ancestor, Wang Deci, originally from Chengdu, bringing the architectural style of Chengdu to the depths of the Taihang Mountains. The people of Wang’an Village have created a unique architectural form, with red stone walls symbolizing the Taihang Mountain folk houses, and watchtowers and tile houses reflecting the characteristics of Sichuan folk houses.
As the protection of traditional villages progresses, the tourism in Wang’an Village is just beginning to flourish. Village resident Wang Dongmei has obtained a tour guide license to provide tour guide services for visitors, bringing her an income of around 1,500 to 1,600 yuan per month. Wang Dongmei said that there is an unwritten rule in the village that the width of alleys must allow sedan chairs for joyous occasions and coffins for mourning occasions, so there are no narrow alleys in the village. “Since the eastern family built their houses first, they followed the architectural feng shui of a jade belt around the waist, making their houses protrude, and when the western family’s master built their house, they left enough space for the alleys, bending the construction to form the current ‘Extended Curved Alleys.'”
Every stone in Wang’an Village carries history, and every courtyard has a story. “A thousand miles of home letters were for a wall, why not give way three feet?” This is a reference to the six-foot alley in Tongcheng, Anhui, but Wang’an Village also has a harmonious and courteous alleyway – the Extended Curved Alleys.
Moreover, the buildings at the corners of the alleys in Wang’an Village are designed with “rounding the corners,” where at the corner of a major intersection, the right angles between the walls are deliberately smoothed into rounded arcs, which not only facilitates the passage of donkeys but also contains the beautiful implication of “completeness and reunion.”
Inside a four-sided courtyard from the Qing Dynasty in Wang’an Village, the “Golden Shuttle Sister” traditional hand-loomed cloth workshop is undergoing renovations, expected to be completed in two months. The renovation funding comes from the traditional village protection funds of the local Housing and Urban-Rural Development Department. The workshop’s director, Wang Xiangyu, said that after the renovation, all the rooms will be connected, making it convenient for tourists to purchase traditional hand-loomed cloth products.
Wang Xiangyu, who was born and raised in Wang’an Village, founded the “Golden Shuttle Sister” traditional hand-loomed cloth workshop with the aim of preserving and promoting the culture of traditional hand-loomed cloth. By protecting and utilizing these traditional villages, Wang’an Village not only preserves its cultural heritage but also provides villagers with a new source of income, promoting rural revitalization.
