Title: “South China Sea Gigantic Gas Field: CNOOC Innovates to Discover a Thousand Billion Cubic Meters of Shallow Sub-sea Gas Field”

Keywords: South China Sea Gas Field, Thousand Billion Cubic Meters, Technological Innovation

Content:

August 7, 2023 – CNOOC announced that the newly discovered Lingshui 36-1 gas field in the southeast waters of Hainan Island has successfully passed the review and filing by relevant state departments. The gas field has been proven to have geological reserves exceeding 10 billion cubic meters, making it the world’s first large gas field in ultra-deep waters at a shallow stratum, realizing an innovation in the field of marine oil and gas exploration theory and filling a global technical gap. As of now, CNOOC’s cumulative proven natural gas geological reserves in the Northern Parallel Zone of the South China Sea, Yongkang Bay, Qiongdongnan, and Zhujiang Estuary have exceeded 1 trillion cubic meters, bringing the “South China Sea Trillion Cubic Meter Gas Zone” from a blueprint to reality. This has significant implications for ensuring national energy security and optimizing China’s energy supply structure.

In 2018, CNOOC launched the “Seven-Year Action Plan” to build the “South China Sea Trillion Cubic Meter Gas Zone” by 2025, increasing its efforts to explore complex offshore oil and gas resources. In 2022, CNOOC discovered China’s first deep-water deep-stratum gas field, Bao Island 21-1, in the Baodong depression of the Qiongdongnan basin, narrowing the reserve gap for achieving the goal of building the “South China Sea Trillion Cubic Meter Gas Zone” to less than 10 billion cubic meters.

“To ensure the safety of offshore drilling operations, the industry generally avoids crossing dangerous shallow gas layers in the well design,” said Chen Haodong, General Manager of the Engineering Technology Operation Center of CNOOC Hainan Branch. “This time, we actively sought out the challenge and found opportunities in the crisis.” After rigorous technical analysis, CNOOC’s operation team boldly implemented the world’s first ultra-deep-water, ultra-shallow-stratum drilling project, safely completing various drilling, coring, and testing objectives in the ultra-deep-water, ultra-shallow-stratum gas reservoir. The team high-quality obtained geological data from the area, accurately depicting the full underground profile of the gas field and achieving a precise and rapid evaluation of the global first ultra-deep-water, ultra-shallow-stratum gas field.

CNOOC’s Chief Geologist Xu Changgui stated, “The exploration practice of Lingshui 36-1 has revealed the possibility of transforming ultra-deep-water, ultra-shallow-stratum gas resources from ‘hazardous gas’ affecting drilling and completion operations into clean energy with development value, which is of great significance for the exploration and development of resources in similar offshore conditions both in China and globally.”

The successful exploration of Lingshui 36-1 gas field has further perfected China’s self-established technical system for the exploration and development of deep-water complex oil and gas resources, fully verifying its advanced and reliable nature. The confirmation of the gas field’s reserves completes the final piece of the puzzle for the “South China Sea Trillion Cubic Meter Gas Zone” construction map.

This significant discovery not only provides China with abundant clean energy but also contributes Chinese wisdom and solutions to the global marine oil and gas exploration field, with profound implications for the adjustment of China’s energy structure and sustainable development.
