Title: China’s Manufacturing PMI Shows a Slight Decline in July, but Business Expectations Remain Optimistic

The National Bureau of Statistics of China released on July 31st that the Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) for China’s manufacturing sector stood at 49.4% in July, a slight decrease from the previous month. This index indicates that despite facing challenges such as traditional seasonal production lulls, insufficient market demand, and extreme weather, many businesses remain optimistic about the short-term market outlook.

Zhao Qinghai, a senior statistician at the National Bureau of Statistics’ Survey Center for the Service Industry, pointed out that the manufacturing production index in July was 50.1%, which although decreased from the previous month, remains in the expansion range. Additionally, the new orders index was 49.3%, showing a decline in market demand but still in expansion. Looking at the sectors, industries such as paper and printing, education, sports, entertainment, and consumer goods, as well as railway, ship, aircraft, and space equipment, performed vibrantly, with rapid growth in both supply and demand.

Influenced by the decline in commodity prices and other factors, the major raw materials purchase price index and the ex-factory price index both showed a decrease in July, indicating a general decline in the price level of manufacturing.

Looking at the type of enterprises, the PMI for large enterprises was 50.5%, showing an increase from the previous month, indicating the stable supporting role of large enterprises in the manufacturing sector. The PMIs for medium and small enterprises were 49.4% and 46.7%, respectively, with a decrease, but the operational activity expectation index was 53.1%, still in the expansion range, indicating that businesses remain optimistic about the future market development.

Overall, despite a slight decline in China’s manufacturing PMI in July, it remained above the dividing line, indicating that the manufacturing sector is generally maintaining stable operation. The optimistic expectations of businesses are expected to support the continued stable development of the manufacturing sector.
