Title: Shanghai Launches Early Screening Program for Liver Cancer to Enhance Public Health Awareness
With the global burden of liver diseases growing increasingly severe, particularly the rising incidence of liver cancer, China is facing a severe challenge. To reduce the disease burden brought by liver cancer, Shanghai recently launched an early screening program for liver cancer targeting community residents. In an interview, Fang Jia, a Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the President of Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University, stated that through early screening and diagnosis, it is possible to effectively reduce the threat of liver cancer to public health.
On July 26, the “Green Ribbon – Liver Cancer Prevention and Management Program” was officially launched in Shanghai. Liver cancer often develops without symptoms, and coupled with insufficient attention to regular screening, the rate of early diagnosis is low, leading to 70% to 80% of patients being diagnosed at a locally advanced or distant metastatic stage. Therefore, the Shanghai Municipal Health Commission, in collaboration with multiple departments, has formulated the “Health Action Plan for Shanghai – Cancer Prevention and Control Action Plan (2023-2030),” initiating comprehensive risk assessment and screening management for a variety of common cancers, including liver cancer.
Zhou Min, the Director of the Health Commission of the Hongkou District of Shanghai, stated that the Hongkou District, supported by Zhongshan Hospital of Fudan University, actively promotes the comprehensive management of liver tumors and early screening and diagnosis.
