News Title: UN Experts Offer Training in Kunming to Boost Chinese Firms’ International Procurement Competitiveness
Keywords: Cross-border procurement, UN officials, Chinese enterprise competitiveness
Content: UN officials held a workshop titled “Cross-border Procurement Course” in Kunming, aimed at enhancing the international procurement competitiveness of Chinese enterprises. The UNHCR Procurement Officer in China, Ling Yun, emphasized that companies need to register online, improve their sustainable procurement capabilities, align with international standards, and ensure procurement processes are in compliance to become suppliers for the UNHCR. This workshop was conducted in Kunming, Yunnan Province, and attracted representatives and procurement officials from various UN agencies such as the UNHCR, UNDP, and UNOPS.
UN procurement is recognized as a crucial pathway for developing countries and regions to access technical assistance, drive economic and social sustainability. In 2023, the UNHCR’s global procurement expenditure reached $1.32 billion, highlighting its significant role as a major procurement body. UNOPS Project Officer, Lu Ruigang, advised Chinese enterprises to leverage the unique geographical advantage of Yunnan, China’s southwestern border, to actively participate in UN procurement projects.
However, most Chinese companies face challenges in accessing the UN procurement market, such as low participation rates, low winning rates, and difficulty in securing large orders. The General Manager of the International Public Procurement Big Data Platform, Li Bin, suggested that companies could expand their cooperation with the UN by focusing on their strengths, deeply understanding procurement rules, and building a bidding business ecosystem. Moreover, Mr. Zhao Xinning, the General Manager of the Overseas Business Division of Kunming Pharmaceutical Group, stressed the importance of identifying one’s positioning and focusing on “soft” standards like quality system certification when dealing with UN procurement.
As the organizer of this event, the Secretary General of the China Machinery and Electronics Importers Association, Guo Kuilong, stated that the China Machinery and Electronics Importers Association is committed to facilitating its member enterprises’ participation in UN procurement and promoting Chinese enterprises and products. He hopes that through this event, core exhibitors and buyers at the South Asia Expo will be provided with a platform to “go global” and receive precise and effective services.
This workshop not only provided participating companies with an opportunity to gain a deep understanding of the UN procurement process and rules but also offered valuable guidance and resources to enhance the competitiveness of Chinese enterprises in the international procurement market. In the future, as more Chinese companies gain a deeper understanding and adapt to international procurement standards and procedures, they are expected to achieve greater success in the UN procurement market.
