### Observations at the Bank of Poyang Lake: Agricultural Machinery Boosts “Double Harvest” Rush

As the peak season for early rice harvest and late rice planting, known as the “double harvest,” unfolds, the agricultural scene along the shores of Poyang Lake is bustling, setting the stage for a new chapter of the harvest symphony. In the ancient farming town of Gubu in Yuci County, Jiangxi, renowned for its wide expanses of rice fields and stable grain yields, has long been a breadbasket. On July 22nd, coinciding with the Chinese solar term “Great Heat,” when the proverb says, “Small Heat cuts, Great Heat cuts,” the grain farmers in Gubu are busy using modern agricultural machinery to harvest their rice, aiming to maximize efficiency and ensure timely grain collection.

In Gubu’s Jinsan Village, grain farmer Wu Tingshai stands on a tractor path, directing several rice harvesters into the rice fields. With the rumble of the machinery, rice stalks are swiftly gathered, processed through threshing and straw chopping stages, and loaded onto transport vehicles, a process far more efficient than traditional manual harvesting. Grain farmer Tang Wenhua reflects on the past struggles during the “double harvest” season, expressing gratitude for the significant reduction in labor intensity and increase in efficiency brought about by agricultural mechanization.

In Zhangyang Village, another area in Gubu, grain farmer Zhang Kemao experiences the convenience of modern agriculture. He notes that by enlisting an agricultural service center, he can now access a comprehensive suite of mechanized services from planting to harvesting, drying, and beyond, which has increased his cultivated land from several dozen to nearly three hundred acres, significantly boosting his farming efficiency.

Chou Yong’an, a deputy president of the Yuci Federation of Industry and Commerce and the head of the Yuigan Rich and High-Quality Rice Planting Professional Cooperative, explains that to cater to the needs of hundreds of grain farmers, they have invested in an agricultural service center, which boasts 64 sets of agricultural machinery. This has enabled a 98% level of integrated mechanization in rice cultivation, harvest, and collection. Moreover, by partnering with agricultural enterprises, they have established a full supply chain from rice cultivation to processing and sales, not only increasing farmers’ incomes but also driving sustainable agricultural development.

Guan Shengjun, the director of the Gubu Agriculture Comprehensive Station, states that through the introduction of agricultural service centers and enterprises, the town has strengthened its mechanisms for benefiting farmers, spurring agricultural development. Over recent days, various types of agricultural machinery have been deployed in the fields, showcasing the technological prowess of modern agriculture and leading the “double harvest” into a new era.

As “the Rice Granary of the South” and one of China’s 13 major grain-producing regions, the agricultural development around Poyang Lake is increasingly moving towards modernization and efficiency. The “double harvest” along the Poyang Lake not only highlights the laborious work of farmers but also exemplifies the transformative power of agricultural technology, infusing new vitality into rural revitalization.
