MOSCOW, March 21 (Xinhua) — Dmitry Rogozin, head of Russia’s Roscosmos State Space Corporation, said on Monday that the technical malfunction that caused the postponement of the launch of the Soyuz-2.1a rocket carrying the Soyuz MS-25 spacecraft from the Baikonur Cosmodrome has been identified and the launch will be rescheduled for March 23.
Rogozin told reporters in Moscow that the launch of the Soyuz MS-25, originally slated for March 22, was postponed due to a technical fault detected during the pre-launch inspection of the carrier rocket.
The issue was related to an abnormal operation of a sensor element on the rocket, which could potentially affect the normal launch of the spacecraft, Rogozin said, adding that the problem has been resolved and the launch preparations are underway.
The Soyuz MS-25 is scheduled to carry three Russian cosmonauts — commander Oleg Artemyev, flight engineer Denis Matveev, and flight engineer Sergey Korsakov — to the International Space Station (ISS), where they will conduct a series of scientific experiments and technical tests. They are expected to stay on the ISS for six months.
The launch delay is the latest setback for Russia’s space industry, which has experienced several failures in recent years, including the failure of the Progress MS-14 cargo spacecraft to dock with the ISS shortly after launch last year.
