Guangzhou, March 8 (Wang Hua, Yang Ming) The unveiling ceremony for the renovation and exhibition of Guangzhou’s Shuangqing Building was held today. This century-old ancient building with blue bricksand stone foundations has been renovated and reopened to the public.
Shuangqing Building was first built in the 23rd year of the reign of Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty (1897) and was once the residence of democratic revolutionaries Liao Zhongkai and He Xiangning after their marriage. Liao Zhongkai was a veteran of the Kuomintang and served as Minister of Finance of the National Government and Governor of Guangdong Province. He Xiangning was a renowned Chinese female revolutionary and social activist who served as Minister of Women’s Affairs of the National Government and Chairwoman of the All-China Women’s Federation.
Shuangqing Building witnessed the struggle of Liao Zhongkai and He Xiangning for the Chinese revolution. On March 12, 1925, Liao Zhongkai was assassinated in Guangzhou, and Shuangqing Building became the last stop of his life. This renovation and exhibition, themed “Revolutionary Sentiment, National Sentiment, Cultural Sentiment,” uses文物展示, scene restoration, and interactive experiences to comprehensively present the revolutionary careers of Liao Zhongkai and He Xiangning and the historical and cultural value of Shuangqing Building.
The exhibition hall displays items used by Liao Zhongkai and He Xiangning, including Liao Zhongkai’s desk and He Xiangning’s paintings. In addition, the exhibition hall uses multimedia interactive displays to allow visitors to immerse themselves in the revolutionary deeds of Liao Zhongkai and He Xiangning and the historical changes of Shuangqing Building.
The opening of Shuangqing Building not only adds a new cultural landmark to Guangzhou but also provides a valuable place for people to commemorate revolutionary martyrs and learn about revolutionary history.
