Can eating photosensitizing foods make you tan more easily?

Asspring arrives and the sun shines brightly, many people enjoy spending time outdoors. However, there are rumors that eating photosensitizing foods, such as celery, can make you more susceptible to tanning. Experts have debunked this claim, stating that normal dietary intake does not lead to phototoxic damage.

Liu Su, aresearcher at the Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences, explains that photosensitizing foods contain substances such as furanocoumarins, which can produce phototoxic reactions when exposed to ultraviolet light, causing skin inflammation and pigmentation.

However, the amount of photosensitizing substances in a normal diet is too low to cause phototoxic damage. Liu Su points out that common photosensitizing foods such as celery, coriander, and lemon, when consumed in daily amounts, do not cause skin problems.

Yang Shuxia, chief physician of the Department of Dermatology at Peking University First Hospital, also states that regardless of whether you consumephotosensitizing foods, prolonged exposure to strong sunlight can lead to tanning and sunburn. Therefore, it is crucial to take sun protection measures.

Yang Shuxia recommends applying sunscreen when going outdoors, choosing products with SPF 30 or higher and PA++ or higher. Additionally, wear protective gear such as a sun hat and sunglasses. Avoid going out during the peak sunlight hours of 10 am to 4 pm, or choose to engage in activities in shaded areas.

Experts remind us that if you experience skin redness, itching, or other discomfort after consuming photosensitizing foods, seek medical attention promptly to prevent the condition from worsening.
