Glaucoma, a leading cause of blindness, is becoming increasingly common in younger people.

On March 6, the world observes “World Glaucoma Day.” Glaucoma is an eye disease primarily caused by impaired fluid drainage in the eye. It is the second leading cause of blindness worldwide and the leading cause of irreversible blindness. If left untreated, it can lead to vision loss.

Professor Ge Jian ofZhongshan Ophthalmic Center at Sun Yat-sen University noted in a lecture on glaucoma prevention and treatment that the prevalence of glaucoma is around 1%-2% and increases with age, reaching 5%-10% in people over 60.

In recent years, glaucoma has been trending younger, with the prevalence among people aged 30-40 also gradually rising. Ge Jian attributes this to modern lifestyle and eye usage habits, such as prolonged use of electronic devices and lack of outdoor activities.

Early symptoms of glaucoma are often subtle and easily overlooked. Ge Jian advises seeking medical attention promptly if experiencing symptoms such as decreasedvision, visual field defects, or eye pain.

Treatment options for glaucoma include medication, laser therapy, and surgery. Ge Jian emphasizes that glaucoma is a chronic condition that requires long-term management. Patients should adhere to prescribed medications, attend regular follow-up appointments, and control eye pressure to prevent disease progression.

To prevent glaucoma, Ge Jian recommends:

* Regular eye examinations, especially for people over 40.
* Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet, moderate exercise, and adequate sleep.
* Avoiding prolonged use of electronic devices and taking breaks in between.
* Adopting good eye habits, such as maintaining proper posture and lighting when reading or writing.
* Controlling blood pressure and blood sugar to reduce the risk of developing glaucoma.
