On February 27th, Liu Nianzhen, a victim of the Japanese military “comfort women” system and a native of Yueyang County, Hunan Province, died at her hometown at the age of 107. In 1937, when the Japanese army occupied Yueyang, Liu Nianzhen was forcibly taken to be a “comfort woman” and suffered all kinds of torture and humiliation. She returned to her hometown in 1978 and began to tell her experience in the 1990s, calling on people to remember history.
Ms. Liu was the oldest known surviving “comfort woman” victim in China. Her passing reminds people again that we should not and must not forget the atrocities committed by Japanese militarists.
