Content: [News Flash] On this day in history: The birth of Pei Wenwen, a renowned anthropologist, on May 19, 1904

Today is May 19, 1904, and it is impossible not to think of a scholar who made outstanding contributions to modern Chinese archaeology and paleontology – Pei Wenwen. He was one of the founders of Chinese paleoanthropology and the pioneer of ancient stone-tool archaeology, making significant contributions to the development of archaeology in China.

Pei Wenwen, originally named Pei Wenbin and also known by the pen name Guoliang and his stone spring name, was born on January 19, 1904, in Fengnan District, Hebei Province. Gifted from an early age, he developed a keen interest in biology. In 1927, Pei Wenwen graduated from the Department of Geology at Peking University and became a geologist. However, he did not content himself with this and expanded his research field to include archaeology and paleontology.

In 1937, Pei Wenwen went to Paris University in France to pursue a doctoral degree under Professor Bussyet, a renowned biologist. During his time in France, he conducted in-depth research on the archaeology of the Paleolithic Age and the study of mammals from the Quaternary period, achieving remarkable results that were recognized worldwide. In 1948, Pei Wenwen returned to China and continued teaching at Peking University, where he also served as the deputy director of the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology under the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Pei Wenwen’s research in the field of ancient stone-tool archaeology was fruitful. He discovered a series of important fossil sites such as the Hou口店 Hominids in Beijing and the Yangyuan Hominids in Hebei, providing valuable material data for human origins research. Additionally, he actively participated in the biosecurity work for China’s first nuclear test, contributing to ensuring the safe development of China’s nuclear industry.

Pei Wenwen lived a diligent and humble life, pursuing scholarship with rigorous academic standards. His academic achievements received high praise from colleagues at home and abroad and he was honored with national highest scientific and technological awards. On September 18, 1982, Pei Wenwen passed away in Beijing at the age of 76 due to illness. His passing was a great loss to the archaeological community in China, but his spirit and contributions will be forever remembered by future generations.

We here express our utmost respect for Pei Wenwen and wish him peace in heaven. At the same time, we will continue to carry forward and develop the fine traditions of scientists like Pei Wenwen, contributing our own strength to the prosperity and development of China’s science and technology industry.
