On this day in 1942, renowned Chinese literatus Guo Moruo created a historically significant and valuable work, the historical play “Qu Yuan”. Set in the Warring States period, the play tells the story of Qu Yuan, a prominent politician and poet in the State of Chu, who was framed and persecuted for his advocacy of political reforms and alliance with the State of Qi against the powerful State of Qin. Qu Yuan had once gained the trust of King Huai of Chu, but was framed by the Queen Mother and the secret envoy of the State of Qin, accused of “adultery in the palace”, leading the king to believe the slander and imprison Qu Yuan, abandon the alliance with Qi, and submit to the stronger State of Qin.
