Beijing, February 9, 2025 – In a significant milestone for China’s technological prowess and its role in shaping global standards, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) has officially released IEC Technical Specification 63290, titled Additional requirements for intelligent assemblies, a standard for intelligent low-voltage switchgear and controlgear. This marks the first time China has led the development of an international standard in this critical area of electrical engineering.

According to a recent report by CCTV, the standard, officially designated IEC TS 63290, defines the technical requirements and verification methods for the system functions and communication of intelligent complete equipment. This fills a crucial gap in the IEC’s existing standards for low-voltage switchgear and controlgear, paving the way for enhanced quality and interoperability in the global industry.

The initiative, formally proposed by China, commenced in January 2020. A dedicated working group, comprised of 28 experts from nine countries – China, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, the United States, Denmark, Spain, and Australia – collaborated over nearly five years to develop the standard. Despite challenges posed by the global pandemic, the team persevered through numerous online meetings and discussions. Their efforts culminated in a unanimous vote of approval from 18 member countries on September 27, 2024, leading to the official publication on November 28, 2024.

This new standard specifies the definitions, service conditions, structural requirements, technical characteristics, and verification requirements for intelligent low-voltage switchgear and controlgear. It provides a standardized framework for the design, testing, and validation of these products, ensuring greater consistency and reliability across the industry.

The implications of IEC TS 63290 are far-reaching. By establishing clear technical requirements and verification methods for intelligent complete equipment, the standard will drive innovation and improve the overall quality of these systems. This will not only benefit manufacturers but also end-users who rely on these critical components for power distribution and control.

Furthermore, this achievement represents a significant breakthrough for China. It signifies the country’s growing influence in the international standards arena and its commitment to contributing to the advancement of global industries. By taking the lead in developing this standard, China has demonstrated its technical expertise and its ability to collaborate effectively with international partners.

The successful publication of IEC TS 63290 also creates a more favorable environment for Chinese products and technologies to compete in the global market. By adhering to this international standard, Chinese manufacturers can demonstrate the quality and reliability of their products, enhancing their competitiveness and facilitating their entry into international markets.

This landmark achievement underscores China’s commitment to innovation and its growing role in shaping the future of the global electrical engineering industry. As the world increasingly relies on smart and efficient power distribution systems, IEC TS 63290 will undoubtedly play a crucial role in ensuring the quality, reliability, and interoperability of intelligent low-voltage switchgear and controlgear worldwide.
