Zelensky Casts Doubt on Trump’s Plan to End Ukraine War, Warns of PotentialConcessions
Budapest, Hungary – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy hasexpressed skepticism about US President-elect Donald Trump’s claims of having a swift solution to the ongoing conflict with Russia, stating he is unaware of any details regardingsuch a plan. Zelenskyy believes that a hasty end to the war would necessitate significant concessions from Kyiv.
During the Fifth European Political Community Leaders’Summit in Budapest on Tuesday, Zelenskyy acknowledged Trump’s desire for a quick resolution but emphasized that they have not discussed any specific plans. If it’s just quick, it means losses for Ukraine. I just don’t understandhow it can happen otherwise. Maybe we don’t know something, we don’t see it, Zelenskyy said.
He added, We must be prepared for any decision. We want a fair end to this war. Iam sure that an urgent end to the war means losses.
Zelenskyy’s comments come amidst growing concerns about the future of US support for Ukraine following Trump’s election victory. Trump has repeatedly asserted that he could resolve the conflict within 24 hours if re-elected, a claim met with skepticism fromZelenskyy.
In a stark warning, Zelenskyy also voiced strong opposition to any ceasefire without security guarantees for Ukraine. He argued that such guarantees are crucial to prevent Russia from launching further large-scale offensives.
The ceasefire is a very dangerous thing. If there are no security guarantees for Ukraine, it is apause for Russia to regroup and prepare for a new attack, Zelenskyy stated.
The potential shift in US policy under Trump has sparked anxieties within Ukraine, particularly as recent reports indicate significant Ukrainian setbacks in October. CNN has described the situation as perhaps the most dangerous moment for Kyiv since the conflict began.
The implications ofa potential change in US support for Ukraine remain unclear, but Zelenskyy’s statements highlight the precarious situation facing Kyiv as it navigates the complexities of the ongoing conflict and the potential for a new chapter in US-Ukraine relations.
