In a rapidly changing modern society, people are increasingly eager to explore how their city came to be what it is today. As a result,city biographies have become a popular literary genre. In recent years, the publication of British author Peter Ackroyd’s London: The Biography sparked a wave ofinterest in city biographies. In the domestic publishing world, there has also been a series of city biographies written by authors, including Beijing: The Biography, Shanghai: The Biography, Nanjing: The Biography, and Guangzhou:The Biography.

In October 2024, Jiang Lan’s new work, China’s Historical and Cultural City Reader: Chengdu Volume (hereinafter referred to as Chengdu Volume), was officially published by Chengdu TimesPublishing House. This is the second city biography that Jiang Lan has written about Chengdu, following the publication of Chengdu: The Biography by Sichuan People’s Publishing House in 2023.

On the afternoon of November 10th, Jiang Lan visited the outdoor music square on Jiaozi Avenue in Chengdu High-tech Zone and delivered a themed lecture titled 《成都卷》——From the Land of Abundance to Chengdu Culture, based on Chengdu Volume: China’s Historical and Cultural CityReader. In his speech, he not only introduced the relevant details of writing Chengdu Volume but also went beyond the book’s content to discuss the history and present of Chengdu. His speech covered topics such as the etymology of the Land of Abundance and Chengdu, and he used the archaeologicalexcavation of the Sanxingdui site as a theme to discuss the ancient Shu civilization, among other perspectives, providing a comprehensive lecture on Chengdu’s history and culture for the audience.

Jiang Lan said, Looking back at Chengdu’s history is essentially reading a book of destiny about heaven and earth, man and object. Itstone is that of a book of creation, showcasing the continuous lineage of a glorious city’s history. Its meaning is that of a book of natural history, highlighting the resilience of the city’s spirit and the complementary nature of its unique customs.

Chengdu rose and prospered due to its mountains and rivers. For centuries,this city, with its unique inclusive temperament, has integrated cultural treasures such as Sichuan tea, Sichuan cuisine, Sichuan opera, and Shu brocade into its everyday life, passing on the aesthetic philosophy of living poetically from generation to generation.

In 1944, after living for a year on the banks of theJinjiang River in Chengdu, renowned writer Zhu Ziqing wrote the famous prose piece Summer Vacation in the East, in which he stated, Chengdu is the fourth largest city in China.
