Beidou SMS, a collaborative effort between China Mobileand China Spacetime, leverages the Beidou satellite navigation system’s short message capabilities and 5G network infrastructure to provide a new generation of satellite communication services. It offers reliable communication in areas with limited or no cellular coverage.
Users can send Beidou SMS messages as easily as regular text messages, simply by entering the recipient’s number, composing their message, and clicking send. Each message can contain up to 20 characters, with an optional location tag that can be accurate to within 10 meters, using only two characters. This leaves 18 characters for the message content, sufficient for basic communication. The satellite connection isswift, delivering messages within 5 seconds, making it a valuable tool for remote residents, outdoor adventurers, researchers, and emergency response teams.
China Mobile users can activate the service by sending KTBD to 10086, or through the China Mobile app or their local branch. They will receive30 free Beidou satellite messages per month, allowing them to stay connected regardless of location.
Several domestic brands, including Huawei (Pura70 series) and Honor (Magic V3), have partnered with Beidou SMS to develop smartphones with integrated support for the service. This move signifies a growing trend towardsintegrating satellite communication capabilities into mainstream consumer devices, enhancing connectivity and safety for users in diverse environments.
