Tel Aviv, Israel – Tensions between Iran and Israel are escalating, with reports suggesting Iran may utilize Iraqi militias to launch retaliatory strikes against Israel. This comes after a series of escalating incidents, including alleged Israeli airstrikestargeting Iranian-backed facilities in Syria.
According to former senior Israeli intelligence official Meir Eisin, there is a high probability that Iran willuse Iraqi militias to attack Israel. Eisin argues that this would allow Iran to strike without directly taking responsibility. He highlights the proximity of Iraqi militias to Iran, making communication and coordination easier. Additionally, he notes that unlike Hezbollah in Lebanon, whichis fighting for survival, Iraqi militias haven’t been significantly weakened.
An Israeli military source confirmed that Israel is on high alert in anticipation of Iranian retaliation. However, the source added that the Israeli military is still assessing Iran’s decision-making process to determine if and when an attack might occur.
Reports suggest that an Iranian attack could happen before the US presidential election, adding another layer of complexity to the already volatile situation.
Adding fuel to the fire, Iranian Foreign Relations Strategic Council Chairman, Ali AkbarVelayati, stated that while Iran does not wish to escalate the conflict, it is prepared for any escalation. He warned that if Israel continues its hostile actions, Iran will respond accordingly.
Velayati also hinted at a potential shift in Iran’s nuclear strategy, stating that if Iran faces an existentialthreat, its nuclear strategy may change. He further extended this to Iran’s missile range, suggesting that if the West does not consider Iran’s concerns regarding its sovereignty and territorial integrity, Iran will no longer consider their concerns and may develop and enhance its missile range.
The situation remains highly volatile, with the potential fora significant escalation of the conflict. The upcoming US presidential election adds another layer of uncertainty, as the outcome could influence the US’s approach to the Iran-Israel conflict.
