South Korea Steps Up Talks with US and NATO over North Korea’s Alleged Deployment to Russia

Seoul, October 27, 2024 – The South Korean government is intensifying discussions with the United States and NATO regarding reports that North Korea has deployed troops to Russia, according toYonhap News Agency.

The South Korean government delegation will attend the North Atlantic Council (NAC) meeting at NATO headquarters on October 28th,where they will brief NATO members on the situation. The delegation, led by Hong Jang-won, the First Deputy Director of the National Intelligence Service, will include officials from intelligence, military, and diplomatic sectors.

Discussions are expected to focus onNorth Korea’s troop movements, potential responses, and the possibility of South Korea deploying a monitoring team to Ukraine to observe the situation. The monitoring team could potentially assess the tactics and capabilities of North Korean forces assisting Russia, as well asinterrogate any captured or defected North Korean soldiers.

South Korea is also considering providing weapons to Ukraine in collaboration with NATO. The government plans to provide aid to Ukraine in stages, depending on the developments of North Korea’s military involvement in the conflict.

A senior official from the presidential office stated on October 22nd that the government is closely monitoring the situation and taking necessary measures to ensure national security.

The news of North Korean troop deployment to Russia has raised concerns among the international community. The potential involvement of North Korean forces in the ongoing conflict could escalate tensions in the region and further complicate the geopolitical landscape.
