Huawei Unveils HarmonyOS NEXT: A Third Force in Mobile Operating Systems
Shenzhen, China – Huawei has officially launched its fully homegrown mobile operatingsystem, HarmonyOS NEXT 5.0, marking a significant milestone in the global tech landscape. The new system, boasting over 110 million lines of code, aims to challenge the dominance of Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android, becoming the world’s third major mobile operating system.
Announced ata grand event in Shenzhen on October 22nd, HarmonyOS NEXT represents a complete departure from its predecessor, HarmonyOS 4.0. While the earlier version relied on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) for its foundation, the new iteration is entirely developed in-house. This fundamental shift promises enhanced system fluidity, performance, and security, solidifying Huawei’s control over its operating system.
Breaking the Western Monopoly
Huawei’s CEO, Richard Yu,emphasized the significance of this achievement, stating, We have spent 10 years achieving what took our Western counterparts 30 years to accomplish. We have achieved complete control over our operating system. He further highlighted the system’s ability to unify the ecosystem, seamlessly connecting various devices and scenarios, enabling free flow ofservices and information.
HarmonyOS NEXT leverages a novel distributed architecture, allowing developers to write code once and deploy it across multiple devices. Users benefit from a unified experience, enabling seamless interaction between devices and the free exchange of services. The system boasts significant improvements in five key areas: design, intelligence, connectivity, fluidity, and security.
A Leap Forward in Performance and Features
Compared to HarmonyOS 4.0, the new system boasts a 30% improvement in overall fluidity and a 56-minute increase in device battery life. HarmonyOS NEXT utilizes a new distributed soft bus, enabling a 3-fold increasein cross-device connection speed while consuming less power. It can connect up to four devices simultaneously, facilitating features like cross-device scanning, shared photo libraries, and synchronized clipboards.
A Technological Breakthrough
HarmonyOS NEXT showcases Huawei’s commitment to technological innovation. The system incorporates proprietary core technologies across variousdomains, including AI, multimedia, graphics, security and privacy, integrated development environment, programming frameworks, compilers, programming languages, databases, cross-scene connectivity, file systems, and OS kernels. This comprehensive approach signifies a decisive break from reliance on foreign technology.
A New Era of Mobile Operating Systems
The launch ofHarmonyOS NEXT marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of mobile operating systems. Huawei’s bold move to create a fully independent system challenges the established order and opens up new possibilities for innovation. The future of mobile technology will likely be shaped by the competition between these three major players, each vying for dominance in a rapidly evolving market.
