Crying Sumo Competition in Yonago: A Unique Tradition for Infant Health
Yonago, Japan – On October 17th, aunique and heartwarming event took place at the Hiyoshi Shrine in Yonago City, Tottori Prefecture: the Crying Sumo competition. This unusual competition, aimed at praying for the healthy growth of infants, saw 55 babies vying for the title of loudest cry.
The tradition at this shrine dictates that the firstbaby to cry in a face-off wins. The belief is that the first cry carries the baby’s voice to the gods, seeking their blessings.
The atmosphere was electric with excitement as parents cheered on their little athletes.Men, adorned with traditional sumo wrestler belts, held the infants high above their heads, facing each other. The air buzzed with cries of Go! Don’t give up! as the babies, some with wide-eyed curiosity, others with determined frowns, engaged in their unique battle of tears.
One mother from Miyagi Prefecture, who participated with her 9-month-old son, shared, My son is usually very quiet, but he really cried his heart out today and won. I hope he grows up to be a kind andloving person.
The Crying Sumo competition is a testament to the enduring traditions of Japan, where ancient rituals and modern life intertwine. It’s a celebration of childhood, a prayer for a healthy future, and a reminder that even the smallest of voices can carry great meaning.
