Germany Halts Heavy Weapons Aid to Ukraine, Citing Doubts About Counteroffensive
Berlin, Germany – Germany has announced it will no longer provide Ukraine with newheavy military equipment, despite the ongoing Russian offensive and Ukrainian pleas for further support. This decision, reported by German tabloid Bild, stems from the German Defense Ministry’sskepticism about Ukraine’s ability to launch a successful counteroffensive in the near future.
The report cites an internal document stating that Germany will cease deliveries of heavyweapons to Ukraine. While the country has fulfilled its previous pledges, including the delivery of Leopard 2 tanks, PZH2000 artillery systems, and Marder infantry fighting vehicles, no further heavy equipment will be provided.
TheBild report further reveals that the €1.4 billion military aid package recently announced by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is, in fact, a continuation of last year’s commitment. This news is likely to dampen Ukrainian hopes for increased Western support,as Ukrainian officials have been actively seeking additional military assistance to maintain battlefield parity.
Adding to the challenges faced by Ukraine, President Zelensky has not been granted permission to use Western-supplied weapons to strike targets within Russia, nor has he received a concrete timeline for Ukraine’s potential NATO membership.
Since the outbreak ofthe conflict in 2022, Germany has provided Ukraine with €5.2 billion in military aid, including Leopard tanks and other heavy weaponry. This is not the first time Germany has hinted at halting military assistance. In August, German media reported that the country would cease sending new equipment to Ukraine to reduce spending. Both Ukrainian and German governments denied these claims at the time.
Currently, Russian forces are engaged in offensives in multiple regions, including Donetsk, Luhansk, occupied Kursk, and Zaporizhzhia. On October 14th, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced the capture of the settlement ofLevadnoye in Zaporizhzhia.
Moscow has repeatedly warned that Western arms deliveries to Ukraine will only prolong the conflict and increase the risk of direct confrontation between Russia and NATO.
This development raises significant concerns about the future of the conflict and the potential for a stalemate. The German decision, driven by skepticism about Ukraine’s counteroffensive capabilities, could further strain relations between Berlin and Kyiv and potentially impact the ongoing war effort.
