Global Semiconductor Sales Surge in August, Driven by Strong Growth in China
San Francisco,October 5, 2024 – The global semiconductor industry continued itsupward trajectory in August, with sales reaching a record high of $53.1 billion, according to data released by the Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI) on Wednesday. This represents a 20.6% increase compared to August 2023 and a 3.5% rise from July 2024.
The figures, compiled by the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) using a three-month moving average, highlight a sustained period of growth in the semiconductor market. This marks the fifth consecutive month of sales increases, with August’s performance surpassing previous records for the month.
The global semiconductor market continued its strong growth in August, reaching a record high for the month, said John Neuffer, president and CEO of the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA). Sales grew by the largest percentage since April 2022, driven by a 43.9% year-over-year increase in sales in the Americas. All regions saw monthly sales increase for the first time since October 2023.
China’s Resurgent Growth
China, a key player in the global semiconductor landscape, saw a notable 19.2% year-over-year increase in sales, indicating a robust demand for chips within the country. This growth is attributed to a combination of factors, including continued investments in domestic semiconductor manufacturing and a rebound in consumer electronics demand.
Regional Performance
Other regions also experienced positive growth in August. The Americas led the way with a substantial 43.9% increase, followed by Asia Pacific and other regions (17.1%) and Japan (2.0%). However, Europe saw a decline of 9% in sales.
SEMI’s Influence
SEMI, a leading representative organization for the US semiconductor industry, boasts a membership that accounts for 99% of the US semiconductor market and nearly two-thirds of the global non-US chip market. The organization’s data provides valuable insights into the health and trends of the globalsemiconductor industry.
Looking Ahead
The continued growth in semiconductor sales suggests a positive outlook for the industry. However, challenges remain, including ongoing geopolitical tensions and supply chain disruptions. The industry will need to address these challenges to ensure sustained growth and innovation in the years to come.
